The Halloween candy is barely gone, pumpkins are still on the porch, yet Christmas trees are already popping up!
And trust me, I LOVE, LOVE, LOVE the holidays, but since we host Thanksgiving, I always struggle with the big question: Do I bring out the Christmas tree early, or let Thanksgiving have its moment before decking the halls?
For some families, the day after Halloween means it’s officially Christmas season.
For others, putting up a tree before Thanksgiving is practically a holiday crime!
So, what’s the verdict?
Before you pull out those ornaments, let's look at the pros and cons!
THE PROS
1. More Time To Enjoy The Magic
Christmas decorations make a house feel a little more magical. Twinkling lights, festive ornaments, and a decorated tree can make even an ordinary Monday feel special. Why limit that feeling to just a few weeks in December? Putting your tree up early gives you more time to enjoy it.
2. Less Holiday Stress
Between shopping, school concerts, work parties, family gatherings, and everything else December brings, the holiday season can get hectic FAST. Decorating early means one more thing is checked off your list. You can spread out the decorating, shopping, and planning instead of trying to squeeze it all into a few busy weekends.
4. More Time For Holiday Gatherings
If you're hosting family or friends during the holiday season, decorating early means your home will be ready for all those festive get-togethers. Plus, you'll get to enjoy your tree as the backdrop for family photos, and cozy evenings all season long.
THE CONS
1. Can We Please Enjoy Fall First?
Pumpkins, colorful leaves, cozy sweaters, and Thanksgiving traditions deserve their moment, too. If you jump straight from Halloween to Christmas, you might feel like you're skipping an entire season. And if you're someone who loves fall, you may not be ready to trade your autumn décor for Santa just yet.
2. The Christmas Excitement Might Wear Off
Remember how exciting it is when the Christmas tree first goes up? If you decorate early, will you still feel that same excitement by Christmas morning? For some people, having the decorations up for nearly two months makes the season feel extra special. For others, the novelty wears off before December even arrives.
3. More Time Means More Maintenance
A real Christmas tree put up right after Halloween has a LOT of days to get through before Christmas. It may dry out, drop needles, and require extra watering well before the big day. If you're going with a real tree, waiting until closer to Christmas is usually the more practical choice. An artificial tree, on the other hand, can handle an early start without the same concerns.
4. Your Holiday To-Do List Might Start Too Soon
Putting up the tree can make it feel like the holiday countdown has officially begun. Suddenly, you're thinking about gifts, baking, parties, and everything else on your checklist. If you're someone who likes to take things one holiday at a time, an early tree might make the season feel longer rather than more relaxing.
So, What's the Verdict?
Is it too early to put up your Christmas tree right after Halloween? Honestly, there's no right or wrong answer!
You could always meet in the middle. Put up the tree in mid-November, add a few festive touches after Halloween, or wait until Thanksgiving weekend to make decorating part of your holiday tradition.
So, whether your tree goes up November 1st or December 1st, you do you! And if your neighbors already have their Christmas lights on while you're carving pumpkins? Just remember…there's room for a little fall AND a little Christmas magic!
