The days are getting shorter, and the air is turning colder.

But Illinois will soon be transforming into a colorful tapestry of reds, oranges, and yellows.

The Land of Lincoln offers some stunning spots to enjoy fall foliage.

Whether you’re a leaf-peeping enthusiast or just looking for a scenic autumn weekend getaway, here are some places to visit in Illinois for fall foliage.

Starved Rock State Park

With over a dozen canyons, sandstone cliffs, and trails overlooking the Illinois River, the panoramic view from Lover’s Leap Overlook becomes a fiery canvas, especially in October.

Galena

This historic town is surrounded by rolling hills that burst with autumn color.  The terrain offers some of the most dramatic fall views in the state.  Take a scenic drive along Stagecoach Trail, visit some local wineries, or soar the skies in a hot air balloon.  You’ll be sure to catch the beautiful colors of fall.

Shawnee National Forest

If you’re looking for a more remote fall adventure, head south to explore the Garden of the Gods.  Here you’ll find famous rock formations and canyons that you can hike through. Being that this is in southern Illinois, the area’s foliage peaks slightly later than the rest of the state, making it perfect for a late-season trip.

Morton Arboretum

With over one-thousand acres and plants galore, the Morton Arboretum is a treasure for leaf lovers.  Walk or bike through the trails as you take in all of the colors.  Plus, it’s an easy day trip if you live close to Chicago.

The Great River Road

Interested in taking a drive? Hop in your car and take a trip along the Mississippi River along the western border.  You’ll pass through cute river towns like Nauvoo, Quincy, and Alton.  Pack a picnic and take your time.  This is a relaxing way to enjoy the crisp, fall air.

Kickapoo State Recreation Area

Here in East Central Illinois, you’ll be able to see the beautiful colors reflect off calm waters.  Canoeing or kayaking is a great way to enjoy a picturesque experience.

Chicago’s Urban Fall Beauty

Not in the mood to leave the city? Head over to Lincoln Park, Jackson Park, and The 606 Trail to catch the changing leaves set against the Chicago skyline.
