Halloween Safety Tips: Keep It Spooky, Not Sorry!
Halloween is one of the most exciting nights of the year—costumes, candy, haunted houses, and all things spooky. But while having fun, it’s important to keep safety a top priority. This goes for both parents and kids.
If you're trick-or-treating with kiddos, heading to a costume party, or handing out candy at home, a few simple precautions can make sure your Halloween is frightfully fun and safe.
Trick-Or-Treater Tips
Plan Your Route
Stick to well-lit neighborhoods and familiar streets. If your children are old enough and are trick-or-treating on their own, map out their route in advance and set a return time. Adding in a couple of “check-ins” is a smart idea too.
Costume Safety
While many like to dress in scary costumes, choosing light-colored ones or adding reflective tape helps keep you and the kids more visible in the dark. If you’re wearing a mask…make sure you have a clear view so you can see cars and curbs, while also being aware of your surroundings.
Bring a Flashlight
A flashlight or glow stick helps you see where you’re walking, while also helping others see you.
Rules Of The Road
The same rules of the road apply to trick-or-treating…using sidewalks and crosswalks, looking both ways before crossing the street, and make sure not to dart out between parked cars.
Stay With a Group
There’s safety in numbers. Younger kids should always be accompanied by an adult, and older kids should stay in groups and check in regularly.
Treat-Giver Tips
Keep The Path Clear
Make sure your yard, driveway, and porch are well-lit and free from tripping hazards like hoses, decorations, or piles of leaves.
Avoid Food Allergens
Offer non-food treats like stickers, small toys, or glow sticks for kids with allergies.
Secure Pets
Even the friendliest pets can get spooked by costumes or crowds. Keep them safely inside and away from the door.
Fire Safety
Be sure to use battery-powered candles in pumpkins instead of real flames. Also keeping decorations away from candles, bonfires, and lightbulbs is a smart idea.
If you’re heading to a party, or transporting your trick-or-treaters around, be sure to drive extra cautiously. Expect kids to be out after dark, possibly crossing the street unpredictably. Slow down in neighborhoods and stay alert.
Halloween should be all treats and no tricks when it comes to safety. With a little planning and awareness, you can make sure the only scares you get are the fun kind.
So dress up, grab your candy bag, and have a safe, spooky, and spectacular Halloween!
