Before You Celebrate The Fourth…Read These Tips To Help Keep Danger Away

Fireworks are a fun way to celebrate special occasions, but they can also be dangerous if not handled properly.

As we head into week-long celebrations for the Fourth of July, it’s important to remember safety while having fun with the family.

One of the most popular fireworks for children is sparklers. While we may think these are one of the safer choices, they can still be quite dangerous due to their high temperatures (up to 3,000 degrees Fahrenheit) and the fact that they are handheld. 

According to the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission, sparklers are a leading cause of fireworks-related injuries, especially to hands and fingers. CPSC says sparklers are responsible for many emergency room visits each year. So how can we make sure we minimize the risks while having fun?

Aside from having adult supervision, here are some essential tips to stay safe while lighting off displays:

Safe Distance: Follow recommended safe distance guidelines provided on the packaging to maintain a safe distance from the fireworks. 

Use Long-Lighting Devices: Keep your body as far away from the fireworks as possible.

Plan For Emergencies:  Plan ahead to give yourself time to clear the way.  Make sure you have water nearby and have a strategy in place to react quickly in case of an emergency. Time is of the essence.

Don’t Relight Duds: Never attempt to relight a firework that did not ignite properly. Wait 20 minutes and then soak it in water. 

Many families may have traditions to have fun with fireworks at home. By understanding the dangers, you can make safer choices and reduce the risk of accidents. 

Instead, experts recommend you leave it to the pros and head to your local community to watch the sky light up for the Fourth of July.
