Back-To-School Survival Tips For Parents
As we cling to summer, we will soon be swapping pool days for school days. It’s time to gear up for the new school year, and that means stocking up on school supplies. But along with new supplies, comes a new schedule--not just for the kids, but for parents as well.
And hey, remember the inevitable meal planning as well? We’ve got you covered! Here are some tips to survive and tackle another school year.
Get Routines Going
There are just a couple of weeks left before school begins. Avoid first-day chaos by easing into routines now. This means setting bedtime schedules and wake-up times, while practicing morning routines so the transition goes smoothly.
Streamline Mornings
Lay out clothes the night before, prep backpacks, and set breakfast choices in advance.
Fewer decisions that need to be made in the morning can lead to a smooth and less stressful day ahead.
Simplify School Lunches
Don’t let yourself get overwhelmed with daily lunches. Create a weekly lunch menu.
If the kids are old enough, let them make their own lunch. This can be a perfect responsibility before heading to bed! Bonus…it teaches them to be prepared ahead of time!
Get Organized
Set up a designated area where the students leave their backpacks, homework, and school papers. This way they avoid losing any important assignments that come home from school.
They’ll also learn how to stay organized throughout the year. When everything has a place, you’re less likely to lose that field trip form.
Create Evening Wind-Down
The kids are home from school and sports which means it’s time to calm down before bed.
Designate a “tech-free” hour for reading or to simply check in with each other. This can help children fall asleep easier. It can also be a good time to prepare for the next day…making sure Chromebooks are charging and lunches are made.
Stay Connected With Teachers
It’s a good idea to make sure you know what’s happening at school, so your child succeeds and doesn’t fall behind.
Choose one reliable method to stay in the loop with teachers. You don’t want to overdo it though, you’re a partner in your child’s education, not the project manager.
Plan For Sick Days & Emergencies
Make a quick-reference sheet with emergency contacts and a backup plan if you can’t pick up your child during the day. Planning ahead reduces stress for the unexpected.
Back-to-school doesn’t have to mean back-to-stress. With a little planning and flexibility, you can create a routine that works for your family.
Here’s to a smooth school year ahead. You’ve got this, mom and dad!
