Sunshine, Splashes, & Safety
Summer is just about here! Longer days, bike rides, sunsets, poolside laughs, and backyard adventures…while summer is packed with fun, it also means parents have more to keep an eye on.
From sunburns to tick bites, and beach awareness, a little prep can help keep everyone safe this summer.
Here are some easy and realistic summer safety tips for your family.
Beat The Burn ☀️
Sunburns sneak up fast. Make sure to apply sunscreen before heading outside. And don’t forget the places we miss the most - ears, feet, and tops of shoulders. It’s also a good idea to reapply every two hours, especially after swimming.
And remember, if it’s cloudy, you can still catch a burn.
Mosquitoes
Nothing ruins an evening outside faster than mosquito bites and itchy little legs.
To help keep the bugs away, use kid-safe bug spray, avoid standing water around the house and dress in lighter-colored clothing, even during evening hours. If the kiddos react strongly to bites, keep an anti-itch cream packed in your bag.
Tick Trouble
Summer hikes, park days, and backyard exploring are part of the fun, but ticks love those adventures too. Our family does a nightly tick check.
Behind the ears, under arms, around waistbands and behind the knees are places ticks love to hide. It’s a good idea to shower after hiking or playing in wooded areas. Catching a tick early is key.
Pool Safety
Whether it’s your backyard pool or a neighborhood splash pad, water safety deserves full attention. Never leave kids unattended near water, even for just a second. This also means putting the phone down to avoid distractions.
Design a “water watcher” during gatherings and be sure your younger swimmers wear approved floatation devices.
Even if your kids hear the rules often, it doesn’t hurt to review them before jumping in.
Beach Days
Beach days are core summer memories, but waves, heat, and crowds can become overwhelming quickly.
Teach kids about rip currents and flags at the beach. Making sure they’re aware of where you’re at can help keep them from wandering.
And if little ones are in the water, stay close enough to react quickly. Waves can change fast.
Bike Rides, Scooters & Sidewalk Adventures
While they may not be “cool” …helmets are key for safety. Make sure to teach the kids to stop at driveways and intersections.
Wearing bright colors for evening rides will help drivers spot you easier.
Summer safety doesn’t have to feel overwhelming. Most of it comes down to slowing down to prepare a little before the fun begins.
So, pack the sunscreen, spray the bug spray, keep an eye on your kids, and make memories. The best summer moments are the ones where everyone gets to come home happy, tired, and safe.
