Navigating The Digital Marketing World During Election Year

We’re making our way into the new year…2024, the year of the next presidential election.

Whether you’ve started seeing political ads take over your TV, or if you’re lucky to have a DVR to fast-forward through them, we will all soon be bombarded by them the closer we get to the election.

I’ve talked with many business owners, and it seems the main topic of concern this year is marketing to consumers when they’re going to be fatigued with the ads that take over their TVs, internet, and mobile devices.

So, what should we do?

Let’s dive in to see how we can adapt to the heightened political atmosphere while delivering our messaging.

I’ve talked with many business owners, and it seems the main topic of concern this year is marketing to consumers when they’re going to be fatigued with the ads that take over their TVs, internet, and mobile devices.

As political ads will flood various channels, marketers are encouraged to choose the avenue that will help their business stand out amidst the noise.

This means knowing your target audience.

If you feel social media platforms are your consumers favorite method of communication, keep on using that process.

In fact, let your audience know through your posts that you will not be flooding their platforms with political ads and that anything you post will be of importance to them.

Consumers always appreciate honesty. But err on the cautious side, you still want to make sure you stand neutral. This is a year of heated political debates, and you don’t want to turn your audience away. Remaining compliant and delivering your promise is critical.

Capital building

While political ads may be getting old, you still want to make sure to familiarize yourself with political events.

Why? It’s important to listen to consumer priorities and spending habits.

What are the candidates debating back and forth about? How is the community reacting? Here is your chance to change your messaging to offer insights and tips that align with their concerns.

To lighten the mood during the seriousness, using humor and wit can also be a good idea.

Along with this comes empathy, positivity, and solutions.

While we could spend hours researching how to navigate the marketing world during an election year, the last tip I’d like to bring attention to is flexibility

While you’re familiarizing yourself with the election calendar, be mindful of peak times when political content saturates digital platforms.

You may want to send an email or newsletter to your consumers instead.

Also with flexibility, if your schedule is to communicate at a time where there is a political debate, try to avoid sending out messages during those times. You don’t want to get lost in the noise.

So, let’s take this year by the reigns and continue to work on promoting your business, because as we all know, the election will come and go, but the marketing will have to continue to bring success to your business.
