Hosting A Stress-Free Thanksgiving Dinner: Tips For First-Timers & Seasoned Hosts
Here we are…Thanksgiving is here! How did we get here so fast?! I’m getting ready to host Thanksgiving dinner and only have days left to prep.
While hosting can be exciting, it can also be overwhelming. Whether you’re planning a cozy gathering for four or a bustling feast for twenty, a smooth celebration really can be simple and delicious.
Here are some tips on how to serve the perfect meal for your loved ones.
Head Start Planning
Thanksgiving can be much easier when you plan early. Start by getting a head count. Does anyone have any special dietary needs? Now you can start creating your menu. Choose one to two proteins, four sides, potatoes, and a salad or lighter option, followed by desserts. Don’t forget the rolls!
Delegate, Delegate, Delegate
Don’t feel the need to do it all. If your guests offer to bring something, let them! Assign easy-to-transport items like appetizers, salads, pies, and wine.
Create A Smart Shopping List
Split your list into non-perishables and fresh items, this way, you don’t have to dig too deep into your wallet all at once. Some non-perishables to snag early include broth, canned goods, spices, sugar, and any place settings or silverware you may need. Last-minute fresh items include the greens, herbs, potatoes, and of course, the turkey (if it’s not frozen)! If it is frozen, the turkey needs one day of thawing for every five pounds, but you can always add an extra day to be on the safe side.
Prep Food In Advance
Great hosts cook ahead…not everything needs to happen ON Thanksgiving Day. You can chop the veggies, make cranberry sauce, pie crusts, and prepare any casserole’s ahead of time.
The day before is for brining the turkey, making the stuffing, and setting the table.
Create A Thanksgiving Day Timeline
This is THE secret ingredient to hosting without chaos. Set your schedule as to when you’re going to roast the turkey, make the mashed potatoes, bake your casseroles, and finally toss the salad.
Join The Table
You are fully committed to serving the perfect meal, now it’s time to enjoy it. Hosts often forget how important it is to sit down with their guests. Do not rush cleanup.
Stack plates, soak pots, and enjoy dessert with your guests. Cleanup can wait or can even become a shared effort.
So, before I head back to making my list, I want you to remember that hosting Thanksgiving doesn’t require elaborate dishes. It’s about creating a welcoming space with your loved ones. If the turkey’s a little late, don’t worry—there are plenty of sides to share!
Happy Thanksgiving from all of us at NinJo Group!
We are so thankful for all of you!
