February is herethe month of love.  But February is also Heart Disease Awareness Month and it’s a great reminder of the importance of keeping our hearts healthy as a family.

Heart disease is a common health issue in the country, and it doesn’t just affect older adults, it can impact children too.  Building healthy habits from childhood, often carry into adulthood.

That’s why it’s important for families to build heart-healthy routines early on. The good news is that taking care of your heart doesn’t have to feel overwhelming or complicated. Small changes can make a big difference.

Move Together

You don’t need a gym to get moving. Family walks, bike rides, dance breaks, or even heading to the bowling alley will make your heart happy.

Plus, this type of movement feels fun, not forced.

Make Meals
Make this a team effort!  Let kids help plan meals, grocery shop, and cook together. Even small tasks like washing veggies or stirring build healthy habits and curiosity about food.

Colorful Plates
Encourage fruits and veggies by making it visual. Challenge kids to “eat the rainbow” or try one new food each week.

Limit Screens
Balance screen time with active time. Try screen-free dinners or a family game night to get everyone moving and talking.

Prioritize Sleep

A regular bedtime helps hearts stay healthy. Create calming evening routines like reading, stretching, or quiet music.

Plus, head to bed a little earlier than usual and your heart will thank you.

Doctor Check-Ups
Make sure to check in at the doctor once a year.  This routine visit can help catch issues early and reinforce healthy habits.  That annual check-in can also act as an accountability tool to stay on the heart-healthy track.

Lead By Example
Kids learn most by watching. When parents choose water, take walks, or manage stress in healthy ways, kids are more likely to do the same.

Overall, Heart Disease Awareness Month isn’t about being perfect.

It’s about making small, realistic choices that fit your family’s lifestyle.

By focusing on healthy habits together, you can build routines to keep the heart strong for years to come.
