Little Hands, Big Impact: Fun Earth Day Ideas For Kids

NinJo Group

Earth Day is coming up and some of the best celebrations are ones filled with messy hands, fresh air, and little moments that stick with your kids long after the day is over.

When you show them how to feel connected to the world around them, they naturally want to take care of it.  Here are some simple but fun ways to celebrate Earth Day as a family.

Plant Something

It doesn’t’ have to be big--anything counts.  You don’t need a large garden to make a big impact. Let your children pick something to plant whether it’s flowers, herbs, or a tiny tomato plant.

It’s fun to watch it grow and it’s a good learning activity about responsibility and caring for something that grows.

Cleanup Game

Grab some gloves and head outside for a quick neighborhood cleanup.  Kids love challenges.  Who can find the most trash? Set a timer and have a small prize for the winner.  Everything is more fun with a reward😉

Recycling, But Make It Fun

Instead of just talking about recycling, show them how it works.  Let them sort items into bins and have a sorting race.

Be sure to talk about where things go after the bin.  Kids love being the “recycling boss” of the house.

Nature Scavenger Hunt

Get outside and explore without an agenda.  Look for things that fly, something green, or something that blooms.  This is a fun way to slow down and notice nature and what’s around us.

Eco Swap

Don’t overwhelm yourself, just pick one small change as a family.  Using reusable water bottles, cloth grocery bags, and turning off the lights when leaving a room are great ways to help our environment.

Overall, Earth Day is a great time to raise kids who notice, care, and try to take care of planet.

So, step outside, breathe in the fresh air and remind your kids how amazing our world is.
